Goodwill Goes Green

Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois was named by Peoria County Recycling Department as one of the winners of the 12th Annual Peoria County Recycling Recognition Awards. Recognized for their efforts in the Building Complex category, Goodwill makes a concerted effort to be green. When a donation comes in to Goodwill, employees sort clothing, shoes, and electronics so that the better donations are re-sold and re-used by thousands of people each week. Donations that are not suitable for resale or just don’t sell in the stores are recycled. Each day, thousands of pounds of goods are processed and baled for recycling. In 2007, the organization kept 3,134,718 pounds of unwanted and unsold goods from being dumped in the landfill. Goodwill also recycles cardboard and paper and includes green tips in the monthly employee newsletter. Patrons are encouraged to recycle apparel and household goods through their donations and purchases, following the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle philosophy.

Goodwill’s commitment to being green complements their devotion to changing lives in the central Illinois community. Their mission is to improve the economic self-sufficiency of individuals and families through the dignity and power of work. Goodwill operates 8 retail stores and 3 attended donation centers, employing more than 200 people in central Illinois. Revenues from the stores stay local and help support programs and service offerings such as The Goodwill Home for Veterans, Computer Basics classes, Forklift training, and The Goodwill Community Closet.
