Life Skills Success
I’m a volunteer at Goodwill® of Central East Texas in Lufkin, TX. I have epileptic seizures. I became a volunteer through Adaptive Technology Manager Phyllis Handsaker. I met her at the apartment where I live, when she was moving in. One day, she asked me what I do. I told her I did nothing and did not work because of my seizures. I stayed home and took care of my 16-year old daughter at the time.
When I started as a volunteer at Goodwill, my first task was to learn how to do computers, including how to turn one on and how to work on it. The next thing I learned how to do was work during tax season as a greeter. I enjoy greeting the people during tax season.
Next, I took a typing class called “Mousercise.” I enjoyed that, and I did well on it. Now, I teach the same class that I learned, every Friday from 10-11.
I enjoy my volunteer service at Goodwill. It helped me out so much and made me a better person. I have improved myself and am now going to Angelina College to get my GED.
