Success Stories

Loretta Wagner

As with many Galesburg area residents, Loretta Wagner became unemployed when her long time position was eliminated within the company. She possessed a valid L.P.N. license, but lacked the self-confidence and necessary skills to engage in a successful job search. She became frustrated after numerous employment applications and interviews produced little or no results. After more than eight months of unemployment, Loretta had exhausted her savings and finally turned to the Department of Human Services for food stamp assistance in desperation.

Once a case manager referred her to Goodwill's Vocational Services, Loretta learned how to effectively complete applications, manage a job search, interview etiquette and accessing the hidden job market. After five class sessions and constant persistence, she was offered a full-time position as a Supervisor for the Knox County Nursing Home. She is making a competitive wage, eliminated all dependency on public aid services and is rebuilding her savings again.

When asked about what she liked most about the Goodwill program, Loretta responded, "I learned to believe in myself again."
