Transferable Skills & How They Can Land You a Job
Searching for a job can be an emotional roller coaster. Rejection is hard for anyone to handle and it’s easy to lose hope. But what if you’re not giving yourself enough credit? Many times we have skills that are transferable, we just don’t realize it. This can keep us from applying for a job which might be a perfect fit.
We all have skills. We all communicate; we all complete tasks and we all follow a plan for our daily life. The trick is to look at the requirements for a job and determine how they mirror the skills you use every day.
Look at a job description and make a list of the duties. Now list the things you do in your current job or even things you do outside the job. Find similarities and relate them back to the skills this particular employer is looking for. Get into the habit of looking at the big picture and not getting caught up in the details.
For example, if you communicate with several departments and/or individuals that is a skill in speaking effectively, expressing thoughts and effective listening. In other words, communicating. Do you write reports or convey ideas in writing? If so, you may have skills in writing effectively.
Do you set goals for yourself or others? Do you record or report results? These could be considered skills in research and planning. You get the idea. Now simply take the skills you have and relate them back to the job requirements. Give specific examples and be concise.
