Success Through Support – Denise’s Story
Being a successful mentor is about more than just spending time with a young person, it’s about truly connecting with them. Denise Trapps Clark is changing lives because she is connecting with young people.
A Goodwill GoodGuides mentor since 2017, Denise has worked with 9 girls in two different middle schools. She has a knack for meeting the girls where they are in life and thus giving them the advice and guidance that best suits them+. Denise encourages keeping a journal and volunteering for the community, practices meant to foster self-esteem and service.
While regularly meeting with the girls at school, “Ms. Denise,” understands the importance of real-world experiences. She has taken them on a trip to Chicago, a private tour of a local college, and much more.
According to the girls she mentors, “She helped me stay focused on my future and follow the right path.” Another writes, “[She] helped me become a better person and handle things differently.”
Denise herself sums up her experience by saying, “Just to hear the young students say I’ve helped them with attitude, anger issues and improving their grades is more rewarding than words can express. It has been an unforgettable experience; one I’ll cherish for a lifetime. If I can impact one life at a time, it’s worth it all!”
